Depression Is a Medical Condition, Not a Weakness
Depression affects a large number of Indian adults, and most never seek treatment. It responds well to treatment — often better than many chronic physical conditions do.

Withdrawal after long-term heavy drinking can cause seizures and delirium tremens, which carries a real risk of death. Supervised withdrawal is safer and works considerably better.
In a person who has been drinking heavily every day for months or years, the nervous system adapts to the constant presence of alcohol. Removing it suddenly leaves that system in a state of over-excitation, which produces withdrawal symptoms — and in a minority, seizures and delirium tremens.
Delirium tremens typically begins 48 to 72 hours after the last drink, with confusion, agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating and dangerous swings in blood pressure and heart rate. Untreated, it has a significant death rate. Treated in hospital, most patients recover fully.
Never attempt sudden withdrawal at home in someone who drinks heavily every day, has withdrawal symptoms in the morning, or has had a fit during a previous attempt to stop. Seek medical supervision.
Medically supervised detoxification uses benzodiazepines in a tapering regimen to prevent seizures and delirium, alongside thiamine (vitamin B1) to prevent Wernicke's encephalopathy — a brain injury caused by thiamine deficiency that can leave permanent memory damage. Fluids, electrolytes and nutritional support are given as required.
Detoxification alone is not treatment. Relapse rates after detox without follow-up are extremely high. What sustains recovery is anti-craving medication, counselling and psychotherapy, treatment of underlying depression or anxiety, family involvement, and ongoing support such as Alcoholics Anonymous.
