Critical Care

Intensivist-led intensive care with continuous monitoring and ventilator support.

About the Critical Care department

The intensive care units at SIMS are closed units led by full-time critical care consultants, with a resident doctor physically present on the floor at all times and a nurse-to-patient ratio designed for continuous observation rather than periodic checks.

Separate intensive care areas serve medical, surgical, cardiac, neonatal and paediatric patients, plus an isolation capability for infectious presentations. Every bed carries a multi-parameter monitor, syringe and infusion pumps, and access to invasive ventilation, non-invasive ventilation and high-flow oxygen.

Critical illness is frightening for families. The unit runs a fixed daily briefing so that one identified attendant receives a clear update on the patient's condition, the plan for the next 24 hours and the expected cost — in the language the family speaks.

Do not wait for an outpatient appointment if any of the following applies. Call 9281862028 or come straight to the emergency department, which is open 24 hours and does not require an appointment.

  • Falling blood pressure that does not respond to fluids
  • Rising oxygen requirement or exhaustion while breathing
  • Reduced urine output over several hours
  • New confusion, drowsiness or unresponsiveness

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best ICU specialist in Anantapur?

The right ICU specialist is the one whose experience matches your problem. At SIMS Hospital, Anantapur, critical care care is provided by Dr. S. Vijay Kumar Reddy (Consultant, Critical Care & Anaesthesia), Dr. P. Praveen Kumar (Consultant, Critical Care & Anaesthesia), Dr. Prasanna Kumar (Consultant, Critical Care & Anaesthesia). Book with a consultant by name, or describe your symptoms and the appointment desk will match you to the right specialist.

Can family members stay inside the ICU?

Intensive care units restrict entry to protect patients from infection. SIMS runs fixed visiting slots and a daily doctor briefing for one nominated attendant, who can then update the wider family.

How is ICU cost estimated?

The billing desk provides a per-day estimate covering bed, monitoring, nursing and routine investigations, and flags separately chargeable items such as ventilator support, dialysis or high-end antibiotics. Ask for a written estimate at the time of admission.

Who decides when a patient moves out of ICU?

The intensive care consultant, in consultation with the treating specialist. Step-down happens when the patient no longer needs continuous monitoring or organ support — this is a positive sign, not a withdrawal of care.
