About the Cardiology department

Cardiac sciences at SIMS covers the whole pathway a heart patient travels: an ECG within minutes of arrival, echocardiography and stress testing for diagnosis, a catheterisation laboratory for angiogram and angioplasty, coronary care beds for recovery, and a structured follow-up clinic for medication and risk-factor control.

Coronary artery disease is presenting earlier in Rayalaseema than it did a generation ago. Diabetes, tobacco use, untreated high blood pressure and a family history of early heart attack are the drivers our consultants see most often — and each one is modifiable when it is found in time.

Anyone with chest discomfort on exertion, unexplained breathlessness, palpitations or a strong family history should have a formal cardiac assessment rather than waiting for a crisis. The department also runs pre-operative cardiac clearance for patients scheduled for surgery elsewhere in the hospital.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the best cardiologist in Anantapur?

The right cardiologist is the one whose experience matches your problem. At SIMS Hospital, Anantapur, cardiology care is provided by Dr. Sai Ganesh (Consultant Cardiologist). Book with a consultant by name, or describe your symptoms and the appointment desk will match you to the right specialist.

Is an angiogram always followed by angioplasty?

No. An angiogram is a diagnostic test that shows whether and where the coronary arteries are narrowed. Depending on the findings, the treatment may be medication alone, angioplasty with a stent, or a referral for bypass surgery. Your cardiologist explains the options before proceeding.

I have no symptoms but my father had a heart attack at 45. Should I be tested?

Yes. A first-degree relative with early coronary disease is an independent risk factor. A cardiac screening package covering ECG, echocardiography, lipid profile, blood sugar and a treadmill test is a reasonable starting point from your mid-thirties.

Can I have a treadmill test if my knees hurt?

Tell the cardiologist. If walking on a treadmill is not possible, alternative assessment such as stress echocardiography or direct angiography may be advised instead.
