Which Health Check Package Is Right for You

A health check is only valuable if it tests the right things for your age, sex and risk profile. Bigger packages are not automatically better ones.

By age group

  • 20s: baseline haemoglobin, blood sugar, lipid profile, thyroid, vitamin D and B12, blood pressure, BMI. Every two to three years if normal
  • 30s: add HbA1c, liver and kidney function, ECG, and annual blood pressure. Women should begin cervical screening if not already started
  • 40s: add annual ECG, mammography for women, ultrasound abdomen, and eye examination including pressure measurement
  • 50s: add treadmill test or echocardiography where indicated, PSA discussion for men, colorectal screening, and bone density in postmenopausal women
  • 60+: add annual cardiac assessment, bone density, hearing and vision testing, cognitive screening and a fall-risk assessment

By risk profile

  • Family history of diabetes: HbA1c annually from your twenties, not just fasting sugar
  • Family history of early heart attack: lipid profile and cardiac screening from your thirties
  • Smokers and former smokers: annual chest imaging and lung function testing
  • Sedentary desk work: metabolic panel, vitamin D, and spine and posture assessment
  • Outdoor and manual work: kidney function, hydration status and skin examination
  • Known thyroid, kidney or liver disease: targeted follow-up rather than a generic package
Worth knowing

A health check is a screening tool for people without symptoms. If you have a specific symptom, see a doctor about that symptom — do not book a package and hope it appears in the results.

Preparing for a health check

  • Fast for 8–12 hours; water is allowed and usually helps sample collection
  • Take your regular medicines unless specifically told otherwise
  • Bring previous reports so trends can be compared
  • Bring your spectacles for the vision test
  • Women should avoid scheduling during menstruation for urine and Pap tests
  • Wear loose clothing and comfortable footwear for the treadmill test
  • Allow half a day — rushing means skipping the consultation, which is the most valuable part

The part that matters most

The consultation. A folder of reports without interpretation is close to useless, and can be actively harmful when a marginally abnormal value causes months of anxiety or an unnecessary treatment.

The doctor's job at that consultation is to put the numbers together with your history, examination and risk factors, tell you which findings matter, what to do about them, and when to be tested again. Never collect reports and leave without that conversation.

What health checks cannot do

No package detects every disease. Screening tests have false positives and false negatives, and a normal report does not guarantee good health for the coming year. Any new symptom needs assessment regardless of when you last had a check.

Equally, health checks are not a substitute for the basics: not using tobacco, staying active, eating well, sleeping adequately, and treating conditions you already know about properly.

Key takeaways

  • Choose a package matched to your age and risk profile, not the largest one available.
  • Health checks screen people without symptoms — a specific symptom needs a consultation instead.
  • Never collect reports without the doctor consultation; interpretation is the valuable part.
  • A normal report does not mean any new symptom can be ignored.
