About the Psychiatry department

The psychiatry department provides confidential assessment and treatment for depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, bipolar disorder, psychosis, alcohol and substance dependence, and the psychological consequences of chronic physical illness.

Stigma remains the largest barrier to treatment in this region — families often wait years, trying everything else first, before consulting. It is worth saying clearly that these are medical conditions with effective treatments, that consultations are private, and that most people improve substantially.

Alcohol dependence deserves specific mention. Sudden withdrawal after long-term heavy drinking can cause seizures and delirium and is genuinely dangerous. Supervised, medicated withdrawal followed by relapse-prevention treatment is far safer and far more likely to succeed.

  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
  • Hearing voices or beliefs that others find impossible
  • Confusion, tremor or seizure after stopping alcohol
  • Not eating, drinking or sleeping for several days

Frequently asked questions

Will psychiatric medicines make me dependent or dull?

Antidepressants and antipsychotics are not habit-forming. Some sedatives can cause dependence, which is why they are prescribed for short periods and under supervision. Doses are adjusted so that you function better, not less.

Is the consultation confidential?

Yes. Clinical information is shared only with your consent, except where there is an immediate risk to life. Many patients attend without their workplace or extended family knowing.

Share the symptom and your preferred day, and the appointment desk will confirm a slot. If the problem is sudden or severe, come to the emergency department instead — it is open 24 hours.
