Free cardiac screening camp at Guntakal

A free heart check camp at Guntakal offering blood pressure measurement, ECG, blood sugar testing and a cardiologist consultation. The camp targets people who have never had an ECG and who would otherwise travel to Anantapur only after symptoms begin.

Guntakal and the surrounding mandals sit an hour or more from tertiary cardiac care, and for a heart attack that hour is decisive. Screening in the town itself removes the two barriers that keep people from being assessed early — the cost of the tests and the day of work lost in travelling.

The camp covers blood pressure, a resting ECG and a blood sugar test, followed by a consultation. Patients found to have high blood pressure or previously undiagnosed diabetes are started on a plan and advised on where to continue follow-up locally, so that the camp becomes the beginning of treatment rather than a one-off reading.

Anyone with chest discomfort on exertion, unexplained breathlessness, palpitations or a family history of heart attack before 55 is specifically encouraged to attend. So are people with diabetes of more than ten years' standing, in whom heart disease frequently develops without chest pain.

The team also uses the camp to explain what to do during a suspected heart attack: call 108 immediately, chew the aspirin if advised by the ambulance crew, do not drive yourself, and go to a hospital with a catheterisation laboratory rather than to the nearest clinic first.
